Columbia Yorkstone Double Sleeping Bag Review

When things get too stressful and you feel like you’re in a pressure cooker, you just want to break free.  One of the best ways of doing that is heading out into the wild and sleeping amongst the trees.  There are a lot of people who don’t like to do that alone, however.  Of those people, there are even less who are comfortable with the idea of rigorous backpacking.  A feasible alternative, then, is to take that special person in your life and drive up to the camp site.  This is a simple idea that allows you to bring everything you need inside your car.  Even better, Columbia has the right sleeping bag to make the trip even more special.

If one would write a review for the Yorkstone Double sleeping bag for the purposes of trail hiking to camp, it wouldn't get very high marks.  The sheer size of the bag alone would prevent one from walking straight.  Add its 14 pound weight to the equation, and you’ve got the makings of a Stallone triathlon workout.  That’s not the point of this bag though, far from it.  You want to buy this double bag because it’s going to give you and your outdoorsy significant other the snuggle experience of a lifetime.

The Columbia Yorkstone is quite comfy to sleep in due to its inner material, a warm cotton flannel liner.  Its polyester taffeta shell also makes it sturdy and easier to maintain.  Like other Columbia bags, the shell also has a cire finish which protects against bugs and supposedly heat seals the bag to contain the insulation.  This also makes it water resistant, a good consideration for any sleeping bag.  The only downside to the shell is that it can be a little noisy when moving on it.  It also generates some static, but that could just be you and your loved one doing some heavy reading.

This double bag’s ThermalC filling performs pretty well in relation to its 30 degree F rating.  Since this bag will be used for car camping anyway, colder sleepers can just opt to bring extra blankets.  This double bag already comes with tiny pillows, but they are removable so you should bring pillows that you prefer.  Also, a very thoughtful addition is a zipper pocket on both sides, almost like having mini nightstands.  The Yorkstone looks pretty classy too.

Now, this sleeping bag is already quite comfortable on its own, but the great thing about car camping is that you don’t have to rely only on the Yorkstone for your pleasure.  Just bring an extra futon and roll the double bag over it. There are also straps on this double bag allowing you to properly combine the two.  Finally, at the end of trip, the Yorkstone double bag can be split in two for trouble-free cleaning and storage.

So in general, the bulkiness of the bag makes it totally useless for backpacking as you probably won’t even reach the campsite carrying this thing.  But the Yorkstone was made for the relaxing car camping trip.  With a decent US$100 price tag, the Columbia Yorkstone is a great purchase for that second honeymoon in the wild.
