Big Agnes Battle Mountain Sleeping Bag Review

While most outdoor adventurers place a premium on having a lightweight sleeping bag, there are a few discerning expeditioners out there who don’t mind the additional burden if what they receive in exchange is a truly luxurious, comfortable sleeping experience in low temperatures.  This is exactly the sort of experience you can expect with the Battle Mountain, a sleeping bag that's manufactured by the company Big Agnes, whose design philosophy is centered on comfort.  The Battle Mountain, a heavy-duty cold climate bag with a temperature rating of -15 F, is spacious, warm and very affordable for the benefits that it provides.

The Battle Mountain utilizes a unique dual insulation system with a view towards environmental preservation without compromising performance.  The top layers of this sleeping bag are filled with decent 600-lift down, while the layer beneath is a synthetic fill made from fibers spun from bamboo charcoal.  Bamboo is touted as being more eco-friendly due to its rapid growth rate, its production of greater amounts of oxygen, and consumption of high levels of carbon dioxide.  Thus, every Battle Mountain bought not only responds to the needs of the purchaser, but also to the demands of sustainable development.  Big Agnes notes that this is the only bag in their line that contains insulation both on top and underneath, providing maximum warmth retention.

Of course, the true virtue of the Battle Mountain is its devotion to providing you with the most pleasant sleeping experience you can get at a height of 12,000 feet or in the depths of a snow cave.  This is due to several factors, the first being its rectangular shape, which offers more room in the shoulder area and a roomier foot box.  The bag also contains a pouch where you can place your favorite pillow, and a neck warmer that keeps you snug and sealed in.  There is a pad sleeve integrated into the bag’s bottom, so the bag doesn’t accidentally roll off of any sleeping pad you use during the night.  Warmth is distributed evenly throughout the bag, and the bottom layer is lined with polyester, which is better able to handle any residual moisture that may occur.  The bag itself is covered by a nylon micro-fiber rip-stop shell that is treated to be highly water-resistant, and durable against possible tearing.

The Battle Mountain also comes with several anti-draft features, which include a draft tube that runs along the length of the zipper, a draft collar and a draft wedge that divides the bag from the sleeping pad that you use.  Users have described enthusiastic satisfaction with the comfort level that they derive from the bag.  Their only gripes are that it doesn’t compress as well as they would like, resulting in them using more space in their backpacks than they would prefer, and the issue of the sleeping bag’s weight.  At between 4 to 5 pounds, the Battle Mountain weighs at least twice as much as other bags designed for severe temperatures.  For the luxurious sleeping area that it provides, however, this niggling consideration of the Battle Mountain is almost negligible.
